Alex's research interests focus on the intersection of national identity and natural resources, especially in the context of climate change. In previous research, he worked on topics such as the legality of resource expropriation and how resource nationalism was utilized by Russia during the 2014 Crimean annexation. His current research is focused on water as a resource, specifically looking at hydroelectric dam development in Georgia and resource politics in the Caucasus. During the 2024-2025 academic year Alex is conducting research in Georgia for his dissertation.

Prior to becoming a student at Iowa, Alex was in the Presidential Management Fellowship program in Washington, DC, where he was a Regulatory Specialist with the Mine Safety and Health Administration and the U.S. Forest Service. Alex was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA.
