Skills for Success
Our political science and international relations programs equip students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences for careers that make a difference — helping them launch their careers and land that first job! Take a minute to explore the many career advantages of studying with us.
We are the only Department of Political Science in the nation to offer a semester-long three-credit course that educates students on the impressive array of career options open to them. Students learn first-hand from successful alums of our department about job opportunities in public service, business, the non-profit sector, law, education, and other fields. These alums help students understand how to build their skills, land valuable internships, network professionally, and secure a great first job. We also offer one-credit mini courses that take a deep dive into specific career areas.
Several alumni-driven career workshops are offered every year on topics such as working on Capitol Hill, public policy, and more. Each workshop includes essential tips and a Q&A.
Experiential learning courses give students hands-on experience with research, diplomacy, and legislative work. To explore more, visit our Experiential Learning page.
Students interested in pursuing law school have access to resources and assistance from our nationally recognized pre-law advisor. Explore more on our Pre-Law Resources page.
Students can work one-on-one with successful alums for mentoring and career assistance. These connections, along with our annual Speed Networking event with alumni advisory board members, give students valuable professional advice and an exceptional advantage in the job field. Current students can request an Alumni Mentorship on ICON.
There are a number of internship opportunities available for every career interest. We provide students with a weekly list of the latest internship opportunities, offer scholarships to cover expenses, and provide references for competitive positions. Find out more on our Internship Support page.
