Haofeng Ma is a PhD Candidate in Political Science. Before joining the University of Iowa in 2019, he received his bachelor’s and master's degrees from two Chinese universities.

Haofeng’s substantive research interest lies in comparative politics, focusing in particular on the issues of public opinion, language of politics, and ethnicity. In his dissertation, he systematically theorizes and examines the far-reaching implications of the interplay between people's native tongues and state's language policy on citizens' identities and political attitudes.

Methodologically, Haofeng leverages a variety of advanced quantitative methods, particularly hierarchical modeling and spatial statistics, as well as the application of the Geographic information Science (GIScience) methods.
