POLI: 1100 Intro to American Politics

I am a race and ethnicity scholar who studies voting rights, election science, and American political behavior. In my dissertation, I explore how voting rights, past and present, continue to influence Latino/a voting behavior and representation. My research shows that both the protections provided by the Voting Rights Act and the way they are implemented affect not only minority voters’ ability to elect candidates of their choice but also their access to the ballot. My work is methodologically rigorous by employing causal inference tools, such as regression discontinuity and difference-in-difference designs. For my dissertation, I have produced an original dataset that measures election officials' compliance with the Voting Rights Act language provisions for Spanish heritage.
